Yep, it’s as simple as that, just by doing this one thing you can improve your kids behaviour.
And this is it….
“catch them being good”
I know you’re shaking your head in disbelief but it really is that simple. So often parents just miss opportunities all the time. We all like acknowledgement that we’re doing a good job, that we are getting things right….
It’s massively underrated and pretty much ignored. As humans we are hard wired to see the negatives (its part of our survival instincts – but that’s another story!)
Have a think. Do you pick your kids up every time they do something they shouldn’t or behave in a way you find unacceptable? Go on, be honest, you’re not the only one, we’ve all done it!
Now think again. How often do you acknowledge your kids when they are doing what they are supposed to or generally just behaving well? Hmmm, thought so.
So how about you give it a try? Catch them being good. Praise them for it. They will love that and so will you (it’ll boost your endorphins – the feel good hormones) Chances are they’ll do it again.
Just a word about using praise though
Kids aren’t stupid. Make it real. Make it specific. Use their name. If they’re a bit older do it in private as public praise can make them feel uncomfortable or embarrassed.
Try it – at least once a day for the next week catch your kids being good and praise them for it
Let us know how you get on ?
